Verizon to deliver FiOS TV to Samsung smart TVs

US telco Verizon has formed an alliance with Korean consumer electronics manufacturer Samsung to deliver its pay-TV service ‘FiOS TV’ directly to the latter’s smart TVs, bypassing the set-top box entirely.

The service will rely on a downloadable app which will provide access to 26 linear channels, including CNN, MTV, HBO and Cinemax. Samsung said it will seek to expand the number of high-definition channels with Verizon up to 130 by 2013.

Verizon had reached 4.5mn video subscribers by the end of the second quarter of this year, having added 120,000 customers in the three-month period.
