YouView continues to add new VOD players

Two new video-on-demand offerings have arrived on the UK’s new connected TV platform YouView: the STV Player from Scottish broadcaster STV, and children’s VOD player milkshake!, provided by Channel Five.

The STV Player will be available in the STV regions of central and northern Scotland, offering the chance to watch shows such as Coronation Street and X-Factor on-demand (STV is part of the ITV network).

Programmes from STV will be available either via the dedicated player or via YouView’s clever new “backward” EPG, which lets viewers select programmes from the past directly from the EPG.

The milkshake! player will offer on-demand access to popular TV shows from Channel Five aimed at preschool children, including Little Princess, Fifi and the Flowertots and Roary the Racing Car.

YouView was launched very recently by some of the largest telecoms and media companies in the UK, including broadcasters the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Five, and telcos BT and TalkTalk.

YouView-compatible devices provide a simple way for TV viewers to access both broadcast and catch-up TV on their television, and the platform is expected to gradually see the addition of other online video services such as Netflix and LoveFilm as time goes on.

BSkyB’s new ‘Now TV’ service was added to YouView a few weeks ago.
