Netflix has reached 1mn users in the UK and Ireland

US video streaming service Netflix has already signed up 1mn customers in the UK and Ireland, taking less time (seven months) to reach this milestone than in any other territory in which it operates.

The company – which also operates video streaming services in several countries in Latin America, as well as the US and Canada – revealed that comedy and drama are the top genre choices among UK and Irish members, whose favourite time of the week to enjoy their streaming entertainment is on a Sunday night.

A recent survey from pollsters YouGov found that ten percent of the UK population now dedicates two hours or more of their day to watching their favourite TV show delivered through the Internet.

Netflix confirmed earlier this week that it will be launching its instant streaming services in the Nordic countries (Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland) before the end of 2012.

After a difficult past year, Netflix returned to profit for the second quarter of this year, but CEO Reed Hastings warns that the next three months will be tough due to the Olympics – although many analysts believe this may be a disingenuous claim.
