Number of OTT channels on Freeview HD to double by end-2012

There are now more over-the-top (OTT) channels available on the UK’s Freeview HD platform than there are terrestrial channels, with the number currently at 70 and set to double by the end of this year.

The channels are delivered thanks to a partnership between local firms Connect TV and Vision247, with the former providing the broadcast applications, Freeview data and MHEG engineering to provide the linking and rendering on screen, and the latter providing all the channel acquisition, streaming, meta-data, support and Content Management Systems.

The service was launched in February 2012 with an initial lineup of 45 OTT channels, which can be accessed directly from the Freeview menu or via the Electronic Programme Guide. It works on all compliant Freeview HD devices, which are already in around 5mn UK households, and are expected to reach 10mn by the end of the year.

The current channel lineup includes a mix of sports, foreign language and news channels from Racing UK, Sports Tonight Live, CCTV and French, Greek, Polish and Turkish programming from the Vision TV Network.

Vision247 revealed to IP&TV News recently that that it plans to add many more sports and international channels to the OTT lineup in the near future (details here).
