Belkin to launch SlingBox challenger

Belkin's new @TV device

Belkin's new place-shifting device, called @TV

US consumer electronics manufacturer Belkin has developed a new TV device which appears to be aimed squarely at competing with EchoStar’s popular place-shifting SlingBox.

Called ‘@TV’, the new device enables owners to watch or record their home TV service anywhere, by attaching to existing sources such as a set-top box and streaming content via Wi-Fi or mobile networks to tablets, smartphones and laptops.

Belkin is offering the @TV device for US$ 149.99, and the @TV app for smartphones will cost US$ 12.99. The app is free for tablets.

It also features built-in Wi-Fi and the ability to record live TV to mobile devices for viewing when not connected to Wi-Fi or a data network. The device works with both SD and HD programming, and can connect to multiple sources, such as cable boxes, satellite receivers or DVD players.

The @TV device will be available from mid-July at online and bricks-and-mortar retailers in the US. The @TV app will be available to download from the Apple App Store and the Google Play store in early July.
