iROKOtv plans to launch a subscription service next month

UPDATED 14/6/12: iROKOtv, an over-the-top (OTT) video service headquartered in Nigeria and dubbed the “Netflix of Africa”, has reached over 500,000 registered users in less than six months.

The service offers over 5,000 movies including “Nollywood” content, and recently announced that it had secured US$ 8mn worth of funding from US-based hedge fund Tiger Global.

Although iROKOtv has so far counted on viewers located outside Africa for the majority of its usage (with users logging on from over 178 countries around the world, according to company execs), it is now targeting customers located closer to home.

iROKOtv is also introducing a new subscription service at the beginning of next month which will provide viewers with access to brand new and exclusive Nollywood releases, updated weekly, for US$ 5 per month.
