Plex coming to Sony’s next-gen Google TV devices

A customised version of popular media player Plex will be preinstalled on the next generation of Google TV devices from Sony, bringing media sharing capabilities thanks to the MyPlex service, according to online news source GigaOM.

The report (here) points to the emergence of a Plex Google TV app on the Google Play store a few days ago, along with the description: “This application is ONLY available for download on late model 2012 Sony Internet TVs.”

Sony announced at the beginning of this year during the CES show in Las Vegas that it plans to launch a new Google TV-compatible Blu-ray player and set-top box this summer in the US and several other countries.

Plex Media Center is a partially open-source freeware media player that is compatible with the Mac and Windows operating systems. It features an integrated online service called Plex Online, which provides a number of plugins for popular online services, including Hulu and Netflix.
