The number of households worldwide that own at least one connected TV is set to grow fivefold over the next four years, according to a new report from Strategy Analytics.
The report estimates that by the end of 2011, nearly 100mn households worldwide owned at least one Connected Flat-Panel TV (CFPTV), representing 6% of global household penetration. The number of global connected FPTV households is predicted to reach 502mn by 2016.
The US is expected to remain the largest market for connected TVs in 2012, with sales projected to reach 18mn units, although China is likely to oust it from the top spot in 2014. The Asia Pacific market, driven by China and India, will account for 42% of all connected TV sales in 2016.
“Consumers are starting to enjoy services like Netflix and BBC iPlayer on their internet-enabled televisions,” said Jia Wu, Director, Connected Home Devices (CHD) at Strategy Analytics. “The increasing availability of a broad range of other services, like Skype and YouTube, will make the proposition of connected TVs more compelling.”
Kantideep Thota, CHD Analyst, added: “Despite rapid connected TV growth in China, its household penetration of connected TVs will remain low, with less than one-third of Chinese households owning a connected TV by the end of 2016.”
On a worldwide basis, nearly 40% of all FPTVs sold in 2012 are expected to be Internet-enabled, and the report forecasts that this will rise to 80% in 2016.
